All these simple little tricks are super useful for basic cleaning and fix-me-ups in the house. Put down your Panadol and browse this list!
Here are some of the tried and tested methods:
1. Dry laundry faster
To dry damp laundry fast, chuck in a dry bath towel to the pile and turn the machine on.
2. Never use vinegar
Soaking garments in a vinegar and salt-and-water solution does not stop colour bleeding from clothes. The best way is still to separate the whites.
3. Fuzz balls away!
The small, fuzz balls on cotton towels are formed from abrasion during washing and drying. To prevent these from forming again, put a large piece of nylon netting in the dryer with the towels. This will cause the fuzz balls to fall off.
For a long-term solution, buy towels labelled “combed cotton” as it’s made with the longest length of fibres. They are also looped so it does not break easily.
4. Keep the silvers shiny
Toothpaste is your saviour! It’s more abrasive than silver polish so only use a pinch to polish on a small area. Moisten the silver, rub a little toothpaste on it using fingers and finally rinse off with warm water. To dry, use a soft and clean cloth.
Toothpaste that contains tartar-control substances or whiteners should not be used.
5. Love the marbles gently
Marbles are gaining popularity again so it’s important to know how to care for it. Marble scratches easily and then traps dirt. Do not use lemon, vinegar or acidic cleaners to clean as it’ll erode the marble surface! Instead, use a soft cloth or sponge with a mild solution.
To remove stains, use a marble polishing powder such as tin oxide.
6. Get grime off the tank
Before cleaning, turn off the water at the base. Next, flush the toilet so you can wipe and clean the walls using paper towels. Watch all the sand and other debris disappear.
7. Scratches, be gone!
If your wooden furniture has scratch marks on it, get yourself a walnut and rub over the scratch with it.
