The spare room is one of those places that we all want for when friends come to stay, in case the family expands or having a room for ‘extras’.
More often than not the spare room becomes a place to put things till you find another place for them and when the friends do come over you struggle to find a place for them the sleep as it has now turned into the dumping ground.
So how do you live your life and still have a space on hand when friends come over?
If you do have the luxury of the spare room you need to plan straight away what you want its main use to be so you can get it ready before it becomes the resident tip. Storage is always something that we seem to need so straight away look at the wardrobe space (most spare rooms are an extra bedroom) and do a simple fit-out of shelving rather than hanging rails to store items. A flat pack system will fit inside and then put in baskets that can take all the odds and ends and if linen over flow is an issue, look at Space Bags to put blankets, sheets and even the soft toys you can’t throw away.
A large expansive wall is the perfect area to put an open bookshelf to store books of course but also store toys, board games and even your everyday paperwork and tax. Buy coloured storage boxes, or you can cover them yourself and put all your paperwork neatly at the base or the highest shelf as they are not used on a daily basis so leave the main shelves for what you will go to on a daily/weekly basis.
Then the bed is the next thing you need to look at. Look at either turning the remainder of the room into a sitting area with a sofa bed and side tables or have a single bed (with or without a trundle) pushed up against the wall so it is out of the way and arrange cushions all along the wall so it gives the look of a daybed and also becomes a great reading nook.
So you want the spare bed but you don’t have the spare room? The sofa bed has always been the great back up for that but there are a couple a simple ways you can add bedding without getting the expense of a full sofa bed. Now these aren’t the alternatives for a two-week stay but are perfect for the casual sleep over with kids or adults.
Large ottomans – long ottomans are not only great for feet and putting trays on like you do on a coffee table but butted up to the couch turns your couch into a single and sometimes a double sized bed. The same can be said with a chaise on a modular lounge.
Cushions – 90cm square floor cushions are perfect in a casual lounge stacked in a set of 3. These got me through many days of kids laying on the floor watching TV on rainy days but when you line three up together it becomes an instant bed. This served them well into their late teens. I had 2 custom made 4ft X 4ft for about RM50 each from Wisma Jakel, Shah Alam. Just go in tell them the measurement and choose your fabric – done.
Bean Bags – I just discovered this one and find them perfect for the modern casual indoor/outdoor living. These great pieces are an incredibly comfy
