Said to be the first modern style of the 20th century, the Art Nouveau style was a bold new movement that was popular from the year 1880 to 1910. The style is defined by the linear lines and organic curves. It incorporates beautifully hand crafted works with stylized flowers and the female form in soft muted colors.
A popular example of the Art Nouveau style is the elegant glass designs by Lalique.
Colors that were often used were olive green, mustard yellow, and brown. These were sometimes paired with hues of lilac, and purple. Contrasting white and peacock blue was also a popular color pairing in this style. Floors were mid tones of wooden parquet, and wallpaper was commonly used.
The style is simple with ornate touches. The iconic Tiffany lamps, high backed chairs, sometimes with floral upholstery, and ornate stained glass windows are some of the most common elements of this design.
