Everyone is aware of global warming and the amount of pollution and waste we’re creating. We have introduced initiatives such as No Plastic Bags Day, Say No To Plastic Straws and even switching to electric cars or use ride-sharing services more. However, some of our lifestyle habits are still increasing our carbon footprint!
Curious to find out how we’re still not truly saving the environment? Here are the 5 things that we should make an effort to change.
1. Throwing out coffee pods
Your beloved Nespresso coffee pods may be creating more damage than you know. Unfortunately, not all plastics are recyclable so they end up in landfills. It’s also a reason why we should wash our plastic containers before dumping it in the recycling bin. The only way around this is to find a recycling plant that recycles it or switch to a refillable pod.
2. Using body wash instead of a soap bar
Oh no! Soap in liquid form takes five more times energy to produce as compared to a bar soap. A study from Zurich’s Institute of Environmental Engineering has shown that people use 7 more times more liquid soap than a regular soap to wash their hands. Looks like our naughty habits from when we were kids didn’t die out.
3. Leaving the TV on when we’re not watching
The television set has replaced radios and a lot of people like leaving the TV on as background noise. Sometimes we even fall asleep with the TV running. This is a bad decision because it wastes tons of energy. If you need noise to drift off to sleep, download a noise maker app like White Noise or look for videos of serene sounds on Youtube such as the sound of rain on a loop. You can even try the list of top ten songs that relieves anxiety!
4. Running appliances during the day
Appliances such as the washing machine and air conditioner work less harder at night because temperatures are cooler.
5. Using plastic straws
Plastic straws can be recycled but it often doesn’t reach the recycling centres. Just take a look outside your car window or the floor of McDonalds and KFC and you can see one or two dirty straws lying around. It is a very bad habit to litter because if it gets washed down to the sea, it can kill or injure sea creatures. There are alternative to plastic straws now such as the metal straws, bamboo straws, paper straws and most recently, a foldable metal straw that comes with a keychain case!
