Although most of us would like to just throw away old furniture and get new ones whenever we feel like it, this isn’t always possible as not all of us are lucky enough to be rolling in money. So what do you do when you have old pieces of furniture that have gone out of style? Simply give that old thing some brand new life with some handy DIY!
1. Repaint a Bold Colour
A super easy and fairly affordable way to breath new life into dated furniture is to repaint it a vibrant and bright colour that will instantly transform its looks. You’ll never know that these chairs were actually really plain before with its new coat of sunny yellow paint.
2. Add Accent Details
This fire engine red dresser looks just fine on its own and is definitely an attention grabber but with the ornate handles painted a bright white, it looks more outstanding. You can play around with different accent colours if you feel like it.
3. Use Modern Fabrics
The juxtaposition of the antique looking bed with the sleek and stylish bedspread blends the old with the new really well and you don’t even have to do any DIY. Match the rest of the room’s decor with some hip and modern elements to keep the look uniform.
4. Change the Upholstery
Most of us probably don’t have the expertise to actually change the upholstery of our old sofas or ugly armchairs so just send it to your local shop and let them do it for you. Choose a classic and timeless fabric that will wear well with time for a brand new look.
5. Decoupage it
In case you don’t know, decoupage is the art of using paper cutouts to decorate something with the special effects and this dresser is a great example of it. It’s an easy way to quickly update a piece of old furniture and you can even cover up blemishes with the cutouts too.
6. Mirror Makeover
Mirrors are great decor pieces in the home and are also functional whenever you need to primp yourselves so do make sure you have some hanging around. They are relatively inexpensive and with a coat or two of your favourite paint colour, they make an outstanding addition to your home.
7. Add a New Pattern
Plain old furniture is bland and doesn’t do much to add some style into your home decor so change it up and make it work for you. These boring chairs are given a new lease of live with some funky chevron pattern and bold colours for some added drama.
8. Apply Stencil
This table had a clear glass top originally which didn’t really look good as smudges and fingerprints could be seen easily. However, by adding a cool new floral stencil on it and a frosted glass spray, it looks as good as new with a fresh coat of paint as well.
9. Swap out the Hardware
Before this sideboard dresser was revived, it was just a boring wooden piece of furniture that looks very much the worse for wear. It was given a makeover by changing the old drawer pulls with some modern glass handles, a new coat of turquoise paint and a trendy pattern.
