Ho Chi Minh City is a large and bustling urban area which is much more developed than other areas in Vietnam. The White Cube House by MM++ architects is located in District 7 and is perfect for a family with two young kids. It’s built on a land measuring 15m in length which dictates the layout of the house.
Concept: (White Cube House by MM++ architects)
As Ho Chi Minh has a tropical climate, the architects took this into consideration when designing the house. The house also has a western orientation which puts it in the sun path. Hence, they split the house into three distinct blocks, which inspires the name of the house, so that it would not look like the normally heavy look of a three-storey villa.
Layout:
The footprint of the ground floor is set back to keep the upper white box shape intact. Inside, it’s an airy, bright space that merges the kitchen island with the dining and living room.
The many windows in the house are glazed on the eastern, northern and southern sides which allows the residents to enjoy the view of the garden. The windows also allow natural light and air into the home. However, on the western side, the windows are smaller to keep the house cool.
On the first floor, the white cube here is the main volume of the house. It houses two bedrooms and bathrooms as well as a large mezzanine along the staircase. It differs from the ground floor, as it’s a solid block created with thick double brick walls to insulate the house. Lush and verdant plants are placed in the house to bring a lively vibe to the home.
A second spiral staircase leads to the second floor which is the third cube. Slate tiles, pitched roof and walls make up this level while insulation keeps the top floor cool despite being in contact with sunlight the whole day. The master bedroom is located on this floor. The master bathroom and lounge room connect to a terrace on the east side and the overall effect of the house is a comfy, cosy feel.
